Definition of Terms
Term | Definition |

Access Copyright | This is the ability to access copyrighted material that will be compensated for to the owners. |
Copyright | This is the idea that the author or creator of a specific piece of work has rights to it from being copied, reproduced or sold. |
Intellectual Property | This type of property can be protected through a patent, copyright or trademark etc. These are generally non-physical materials. |
Royalty | This is the money that is paid to copyright owners for their use of the material. |
Trade-Marks | This is something that shows someone’s ownership to a certain product whether it be a picture, word or symbol. |
Public Domain | This is the idea that any work that is presented as “public domain” doesn’t require permissions to use, copy, or sell. |
Moral Rights | The moral rights are those that are attached to the original author/creator regardless of who owns the copyright. This includes the rights of paternity, integrity and association. |
Performing Rights | These rights are for those who perform a specific act. This would include singing, dancing, playing an instrument etc. Their rights include not having their work filmed and sold, distributed, changed etc. without their permission. |
Plagiarism | This involves basically stealing someone else’s work and claiming it as their own. This also involves not properly citing someone’s work that one is using or borrowing. |
Fair Dealing | This is the ability of someone to use someone’s material if they mention the source of the work. This includes the copywriters name as well in the sourcing. |
Patent | This is when the government grants a right for you to stop other people from making, using or selling something you have invented within Canada. |
Blanket License | This is the ability for someone to have unlimited access to someone’s licensed repertory for a certain amount of time in return of a profit participation. |
