Poetry vocab and Definitions

QuestionAnswer
Poetry a type of literature that uses sounds, rthyms, and meanings of words to describe the world in striking and imaginative ways
Lines first section of a poem, can break, can stretch over several lines
Stanzas lines are organized in units of meaning
Breaks signal that one stanza has ended and another has begun
Refrain a line or group of lines that is repeated at regular intervals in a poem
Variation changing one or more words with each repetition
Rhythm a beat, created by syllables
Meter a poet may arrange words and break lines at certain points
Feet meter is measured in feet
Rhyme repetition of vowel or constants sounds at the end of a word
Rhyme Scheme rhymes follow a particular pattern
Alliteration the repetition of consonant sounds in the beginning of words
Repetition the usage of any element
Onomatopoeio the use of words that imitate sounds
Denotation the literal, dictionary definition
Connotation the ideas or feelings that words bring to mind
Imagery to create vivid words or pictures
Figurative Language to help readers share their perceptions and insights
Simile uses the word like or as to compare things
metaphor describes one thing as if it were something else
personification gives human qualities to non-human things
narative tells a story in verse. they have elements similar to those in short stories such as plot and characters.
haiku is a three line, Japanese form that describes something in nature. the first and third lines have 5 syllables, and the second line has 7.
Free Verse poetry is defined by its lack of structure
Lyric Poetry expresses the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker, often in a highly musical verse
Ballad A song like poem that tells stories, they often deal with adventure or romance.
Limerick Are humorous, rhyming 5 lined poems with specific rhythm, pattern, and rhyme scheme.
Concrete Poems are shaped to look like their objects. The poet arranges the lines to create a picture on the page.
