Agricultural Revolution term for changes that resulted in an increase in food supply in the 1700s
fallow portion of an agricultural field that lay unused each year
enclosure movement created privately owned pieces of land that were farmed with latest technology and methods
market-oriented agriculture growing food for a profit as opposed to feeding only one's family
rural proletariat non-landowners who were forced off farms and had to look for other ways to make a living
domestic industry before the factory system, this was the process of producing (usually textiles) in one's home
Charles Townshend promoted the use of turnips to replenish the soil with nutrients
Thomas Malthus stated that population would always grow faster than food supply, resulting in demographic catastrophes

Battle of Vienna stopped the Ottoman advance into Europe in 1683; also resulted in introduction of coffee into central Europe
War of Spanish Succession 1701-1714 war that threatened balance of power; Louis XIV's attempt to take over Spain
Poland country that was partitioned three times in 1700s; disappeared from map until 1919
