Renaissance terms

Terms and definitions for Renaissance topic

TermDefinition
Patron A person, family, or group that supports an artist, paying them for their work.
Commission An order for an artist to create an artwork that will be paid for by a patron.
Classical art Painting and sculpture from Ancient Rome and Greece. It was studied by the artists of the Renaissance.
Architecture The science and art of designing buildings.
Culture A set of beliefs, behaviours and ideas shared by groups of people.
Humanism A philosophy of the Renaissance that valued human thoughts and ideas. It encouraged people to study classical writings and art.
Guild A group of craftsmen or merchants. They controlled the quality of the work and provided training to new craftsmen.
Artisan An artisan is a skilled craft worker who creates objects partly or entirely by hand.
Merchant Someone who buys and sells goods especially in large amounts.
Apprentice A young boy who learns a craft or skill from an experienced master.
City-state A small independent state ruled by a powerful city. This was the common form of government in Italy during the Renaissance.
Fresco A technique used to paint walls using wet plaster. When the plaster dried, the paint would be absorbed into the plaster.
Perspective A painting or drawing technique that used light and shadow to make art look more realistic.
Pope Leader of the Catholic Church and head of the city-state of Rome.
Portrait A painting or sculpture of a person.
Reformation A split in the Christian church where some people called Protestants left the Catholic Church to begin their own church.
