What is segmentation? Where does it happen Segmentation happens in the intestines. It when the muscles contract and relax to move food around
name one function of B12 in the body? B12 acts as a coenzyme to DNA
What is one symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency? fatigue due to reduced numbers of healthy red blood cells
what is the main functions of potassium and sodium in the body? they help to regulate extracellular fluid volume and assist with muscle contractions
what are the differences between mechanical and chemical digestion? mechanical- physically breaking down food with muscle movements and teeth. chemical- breaking down macronutrients using enzymes and gastric juices
what is the role of villi in the small intestines? the villi are covered in micro villi which increase the surface area to help maximise nutrient absorption in the small intestine
how does celiac disease impact nutrient absorption in small intestines? celiac disease causes inflammation of the intestine walls, resulting in the flattening or damage of villi. this reduces nutrient absorption.
describe chemical digestion of lipids in the GI tract? step 1- starts in mouth step 2- no digestion in stomach step 3- digested in small intestine step 4- absorbed into lymphatic system step 5- goes into the blood steam
