How did geography impact the development of the city states in Ancient Greece? Mountains and Islands made it difficult to communicate with other city-states.
What is one similarity between all the city-states? They all spoke the same language
Define Monarchy One ruler who inherits power
Define Aristocrats Wealthy men who advise the king
What does Aristocrat mean? Best
How did monarchy come to an end in some city-states? Aristocrats overthrew the king
Define Oligarchy A few wealthy men who rule
What does the word Oligarchy come from? Few
What did oligarchs like to do? Went to parties, had chariot races, went hunting.
What kinds of laws did oligarchs pass? Laws that made the rich richer and the poor poorer.
How did the oligarchs get overthrown? The poor sided up with a general in the army. The general overthrew the oligarchs.
Define Tyranny One person ruling who is not a lawful king (tyrant)
Were tyrants in Ancient Greece good or bad? Good because some helped the poor. Bad because after a while tyrants ruled harshly.
What eventually happened to tyranny in Ancient Greece? The people drove the tyrants out. Tyrants were killed.
Define Democracy Rule by the people
Define Citizen Person who can vote
Define Assembly Lawmaking group
Who could vote in Athens? Who could not? Free men could vote. Women, enslaved people, and foreigners could not vote.
Why did some Greeks not like democracy? Citizens persuade others to vote unwisely.
How is democracy in Athens different than democracy in the USA today? Athens had a direct democracy where every citizen voted on every issue. USA is a representative democracy where citizens vote for a representative who votes on the issues.
What is a chariot race and how does it connect to oligarchs? Chariot races are carts pulled by horses that rich men race. This connects to oligarchs because the oligarchs would ride the chariots for fun.
