European Middle Ages
Term | Definition |

Feudalism | Medieval governing of people based on land and service. |
Serfs | Poor people who worked the land for the lord of the manor. |
Nobles | Those born into wealthy families who were granted lands by the king. They were then lord of their land. |
Knights | Warriors who received land for their service as a protector of the manor &/or kingdom. |
Chivalry | The code of behavior knights had to follow that said they must be brave, fight fairly, be loyal, and keep his word. |
Fief | A grant of land under the feudal system during the Middle Ages. |
Cathedrals | Huge churches of the Middle Ages. |
Vassals | Those who were given land from a lord in exchange for a service. |
Manor | The large farm estate that the nobles developed. (part of a fief) |
Crusades | A long series of battles between Christians of Europe and the Muslims to gain control of Palestine (the Holy Land). |
