What is muscle tone? Muscles resistance to passive stretch during resting state and maintains posture
What is muscle strength? Muscles ability to contract and create force in response to resistance
What are the type of Abnormal muscle tone? -Hypotonic -Hypertonic -Mixed -Fluctuating
What are the S/S of hypotonia? -Decreased strength -Decreased spontaneous movement -Weak cry -Poor suck -Abnormal response to vertical suspension
What are neurological soft signs? -Poor posture -Poor resistance to passive movement -Non integrated reflexes -Poor bilateral movements -No crossing of midline
What are the key points of postural observation? -Head -Neck -Shoulders -Elbows, forearms, wrists, digits -Trunk -Hips -Knees, feet
What is the Modified Ashworth Scale? Muscle tone assessment scale used to assess the resistance experienced during PROM, which does not require any instrumentation an d is quick to perform
What is a 0 on the MAS? No increase in muscle tone
What is a 4 on the MAS? Affected parts are in rigid flexion or extension
What is the Gross Motor Function Classification System? Looks at movements such as sitting, walking and use of mobility devices and provides a clear description of a Childs current motor function
After what age can we not use the GMFCS? 5 years old
What is a 1 on the GMFCS? Independent
What is a 5 on the GMFCS? Completely dependent
What is the Communication Function Classification System (CFCS)? Classifies everyday communication into five levels and includes speech, gestures, facial expression and augmentative and alternative communication
Is a person at level 1 or 5 more communicative in the CFCS? Level 1
What is the Eating and Drinking Classification System (EDACS)? Classifies biting, chewing, and swallowing
What is a level 1 on EDACS? Eats and drinks safely and efficiently
What is a level 5 on EDACS? Unable to eat or drink safely-tube feeding may be considered to provide nutrition
