What is the purpose of standardized assessments? Identify children who may need specialized intervention or environmental adaptation because their performance in a given area is outside the norm, or average, for their particular age
What is normally included in a standardized assessment? -Procedure -Scoring -Materials -Manual
What are common standardized tests? -SAT -ACT -GRE
In OT standardized tests are use to? -Determine eligibility -Monitor progress -Make decisions about interventions
What must an OT know about a standardized test? -Scoring -Interpretation -Choosing the appropriate test -How to report and discuss the scores
What are the benefits of standardized testing? -Scientific approach -Statistically valid -Well known, commercially available -Monitor developmental progress -Program eval to determine response to interventions
What are the negatives of standardized testing? -Cannot stand alone as a measure of Childs abilities -Does not take into consideration other aspects of the child -Artificial and anxiety producing scenarios -Rigid -Performance cannot be expressed as a standard score
What is the purpose of a norm-referenced test? Compare Childs performance to normative sample
What is the content of a norm-referenced test? General, wide variety of skills
What is the admin and scoring of norm-referenced test? Always standardized
What are the psychometric properties of a norm-referenced test? Mean, standard deviation, standard score
What is the item selection for norm-referenced tests? Statistical performance, may no relate to functional skills or therapy objectives
What are examples of norm-referenced tests? PDMS-2, BOT-2, PEDI-CAT
What is the purpose of a criterion-referenced test? Compare Childs performance to a defined list of skills
What is the content in a criterion-referenced test? Detailed, specific objectives or developmental milestones
What is the admin and scoring of criterion-referenced test? Standardized or non-standardized
What are the psychometric properties in a criterion-referenced test? Non score distribution, a child may pass or fail all items
What is the item selection in a criterion-referenced test? Items chosen for functional and developmental importance
What are examples of a criterion-referenced test? PDMS-2, PEDI-CAT, HELP, SFA
What is reliability? The test is consistent when that skill is measured again
What is validity? The test measure what it claims to measure
What are general instructions for the testing environment? Well lit room free of visual or auditory distractions
When should you schedule a standardized test? During a time when the child is able to perform optimally
What should we document after the test? -When/where/how it was administered -Performance demands -Characteristics or environmental supports -Levels of tolerance
