Play Developmental

What is play? Any activity engaged in for the enjoyment it gives without consideration of the end result
Does play have a goal? No
Is play planned? No it is spontaneous and voluntary
Is play passively done? No it involves some active engagement on teh part of the player
The number of playmates INCREASES or DECREASES with age? Decreases
Why is play important for physical development? Needed for motor skills, muscles, exercise, outlet for energy
Why is play important for communication skills? Initiate and encourage communication
Why is play important for socialization? Allows for interaction, establishing relationships, sort problems
Why is play important for emotions? Release of tension
Why is play important learning? Allows for exploring, experimenting and manipulation
How does play go into understanding roles? Allows to belong to a group
Why is play important for morals and values? -Learn right from wrong -Turn taking -Fairness -Understand winning vs losing
What is active play? Actively participates in the activity, builds blocks, runs, plays in the game
What is passive play? Derives pleasure with minimal expenditure of energy watching others play, reading or watching television
What play is present from birth to 3 months? Unoccupied play
What play is present from 3 months to 2 years? Solitary play
What play is present at 2 years? Onlooker play
What play is present at 2+ years? Parallel play
What play is present from 3 to 4 years? Associative play
What play is present at 4+ years? Cooperative play
What type of play is where a baby is making a lot of movements and discovering how their body moves? Unoccupied play
When a child plays alone, and does not notice other children playing around them what type of play is this? Solitary play
A child watches other children playing, asks them questions, but does not want to join what type of play is this? Onlooker play
A child plays alongside others but does not play with them, they may be paying attention to the other child, and sitting next to them. What type of play is this? Parallel play
A child talks to their peers during play and have a similar goal, what type of play is this? Associative play
Does associative play use a set of rules? No set rules or formal organization
A child plays with other children to work towards a common goal using a specific set of rules. What type of play is this? Cooperative play
What are the reasons a child might have difficulty with play? -Communication difficulties -Problems with meaning -ODD -Attention difficulty -Rigidness -Poor imagination -Poor sensory processing
