Visioning Process to work with citizens to generate consensus thru a series of meetings gathering shared vision abt the phys, social and env future of the community. Focus on community wants, not existing conditions. Develop 20-30 year vision statement.
Visioning Participants Economic sectors (ag, manufacturing, services...) Organizations (art, culture, church...) Local Gvmt (elected officials, police, transpo...) Personal Charact (age, ethnicity/race, income) Political Reviews (conserv, liberal, mod, pro and anti growth )

Community meditation Might be necessary instead of visioning if the community is divisive and won't speak to each other.
Visioning Advantages 1. serves as catalyst to bring community together, 2. creates excitement in community residents, 3. keeps process on track 4. keeps process moving forward
Visioning Disadvantages 1. adds to the cost of planning through intensive public participation, 2. can create expectations that cannot be filled by gvmt, 3. need facilitator
Charrette short and intense collaborative process for designing projects, planning communities and building consensus. Designed for visioning bc the primary objective involved the public in plan dev from community interaction instead of top-down env.
Community Workshop Similar to charrettes in terms of collaboration and consensus building but w broader focus than phys design incl jobs and housing, health, safety, education, arts and culture.
GIS Tool used to geographically show, train or educate with "what if" scenarios involving zoning, transportation and econ dev strategy.
Interactive websites Used to create dramatic improvements in communication thru interactive visual aids to a larger # of people that can or cannot attend meetings.
Online survey Gather and analysis public input as part of a wider public outreach effort.
Vision Poster Take visioning statement, action steps and pair it with tangible representation of the community to ensure message and buy-in are gathered.
Scenario Planning Uses analytical tools to estimate how well existing or potential plans and strategies will do in meeting important local and regional needs given different assumptions abt the future. Ex. Land use, rising energy costs, changing demographics
