Essential words from the TOEFL exam

accolade - She won an accolade at the swimming meet. an award or an expression of praise
circumvent - I found it easy to circumvent security in the store. to get around something in a clever and dishonest way
dearth - After paying bills, there was dearth of money for food. not having enough of something
jargon - What you hear from the doctor is medical jargon. special words used by a particular group that are hard for others to understand
ludicrous - The comedy show on tv was ludicrous. very foolish or silly
malice - She felt malice towards the person who stole her car. a desire to harm to another person
morose - He felt morose after his dog died. very sad or unhappy
microcosm - The game was a microcosm of the entire season. something that is a small version of something much larger
mundane - It was a gray, mundane day. dull and ordinary
nettle - The trash he dumped on my lawn nettled me. to make someone angry
obdurate - The cat was obdurate and would not move. refusing to do what others want, stubborn
obtain - They obtained a diploma after finishing high school. to gain or get (something) by effort
obviate - You can obviate the traffic back-up by taking this exit. to prevent or avoid (something)
incidental - Receiving a cookie is an incidental part of a Chinese meal. a minor part or result of something else
irresolute - not certain about what to do
hyperbole - describing something as better or worse than it really is
irksome - Flies are an irksome part of summer. annoying or irritating
interpret - to explain the meaning of something
hypothesis - an idea that needs to be studied further
scrutinize - The employee scrutinized the dress after a customer returned it. examine or inspect closely
metaphor - an object, activity, or idea that is used as a symbol of something else
terrorize - create a state of fear and distress
committee - The committee planned a homecoming dance. a group of people organized for a specific reason
anticipated - Students anticipate summer vacation from school. to look forward to
autobiography - a biography written by the person it is about
biography - the story of a person's life written by someone else
resolution - Every crime story on tv reaches a resolution. finding an answer to a conflict or problem
narration - Some movies have narration in addition to the actors on screen. words that are heard as part of a movie, television show, etc., that describe what is being seen
widespread - The damage was widespread after the fire. found over a large area or number of people
