(5.1) Disruption of Trade, where money became scarce, the Downfall of Cities, where cities were abandoned as centers of administration, and the population shifts, where all nobles and other people retreated to rural areas.
Why was Latin no longer understood? (5.1) With the mix of german speaking people and Romans, Latin was no longer understood.
What is the difference between the Roman government to society and German government to society? (5.2) Romans had loyalty to public government and written laws while the Germans had family ties and personal loyalty.
What happened when Clovis feared defeat against another German army? (5.2) Clovis prayed that he called to the gods but that didn't work so he said to god that he only believed in one god and from that he won the battle.
What was used to spread Christianity throughout Europe? (5.3) Monasteries were used to spread Christianity.
Who, in 731, wrote a history of England which became the best historical work of the Middle Ages? (5.3) Venerable Bede wrote a history about England in 731.
Who was the mayor of the palace in 719 that also won the war against the muslims in the battle of the Tours in 732?(5.4) Charles Martel won the war against the muslims in 732.
What dynasty showed up in 751 that would rule the Franks for over 200 years? (5.4) The Carolingian Dynasty and there leaders Pepin the Short would rule the Franks from 751 to 987.
Who made a empire as large as the Byzantine Empire by year 800 and was named Emperor in 800. (5.5) Charlemagne
How would Charlemagne's empire lose its power? (5.5) The lack of strong kings and the three heirs fighting for control lead the empire to a new system of government, feudalism.
Who lived in scandinavia and was home to the explorer Leif Ericson that reached America? The Vikings, they also made the viking longboat which was a perfect for the hit and run sort of strategy the vikings used.
What did the invasions by the Vikings, Magyars and Muslims create? It created widespread disorder and suffering throughout Europe.
What is Feudalism? Feudalism is a system of loyalties and protections based on mutual obligations.
What was the social order in Feudalism? Kings,Lords,Vassals (Lesser Lords), Knights, Church Officials, Serfs.
How do things work on a typical Manor? The lord would give the peasants land to domesticate animals and plow the fields to make food. Then the peasants would pay a tax towards the lord and a church tax. In return, the knights would defend them.
Define Chivalry A code of conduct for knights; a set of values for knights to follow.
What were knights taught and supposed to follow under Chivalry They were supposed to defend the weak and poor and were taught bravery, honesty, respect, compassion, and loyalty.
What are the steps to knighthood? At the age of 7 you get taken out of your noble family to be a knight. At the age of 14 you become a squire and get a knight apprenticeship. At the age of 21 you become a full fledged knight.
Who were knights supposed to defen and be masters to? Their lord, their god, and their chosen lady.
What were women's rights during these times? Noblewomen could inherit an estate from her husband and could send knights to war. Other than that noblewomen stayed at home and did house work. Peasant women had no rights and performed endless labor.
What was a Church's purpose at a local level? The village church was a unifying force in the lives of the people and it served as a religious and social center.
What were the two of the harshest punishments the Church can give out? Excommunication and Interdict.
How big was the Holy Roman Empire? It stretched from the bottom of Lombardy to the top of Saxony.
What started Gregory a german bishop and Henry IV a king, to fight? It started because they argued and Gregory excommunicated Henry and Henry made Gregory step down from papacy.
What caused the Holy Roman Empire's Frederick I to die? He drowned and after that the empire fell thus causing the German States to remain separate.
