Why was there a decline in learning when the Germanic Tribes invaded? Since the invading Germanic invaders could not read or write and since most Roman families who could read or write left to rural rallies, only priests and churches were literate.
What resulted from the decline of the Western Roman Empire and how long did it last? The Middle Ages also known as the Medieval Period resulted from the decline and lasted 1,000 years.
Why did the population become mostly rural of Western Europe? The invasions forced nobles to move from cities to rural areas because the cities becoming unsafe.
Who was the major domo or mayor of the palace in 719 AD and and why were they important? Charles Martel was the major domo in 719 AD. He is important because he conquered a lot of lands to the north, south and east extending Frank's reign as well . He also defeated the Muslims making him a Christian hero.
Who created the practical set of rules for monasteries and convents and why were they important to all religious communities in western Europe? At around 520 A.D a monk named Benedict and his sister developed the rules. They are important because these guidelines became a model for many other religious communities in western Europe.
What is feudalism and why is it still important today? Feudalism is a system of loyalties and protection between mutual obligations It is still important today because feudal relationships helped shape today's forms of representative government.
Why did the peasants or serfs gave up their freedom to the lords? The peasants gave up some of their freedoms for protection from bandits.
Who was the first European to discover North America, 500 years before Christopher Columbus and who was he? Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer was the first European Person to step on North America.
Why did Vikings gradually stop raiding monasteries? The Vikings stopped raiding monasteries as they gradually accepted Christianity.
What was a tithe and why was it a crucial part of a manor system? A tithe is a church tax that all peasants have to pay to their lords making it an important part of the manor. A tithe also represented a tenth of their income
What characteristics do you need to become ato be considered to be a knight and get into knighthood? You had to be of noble-birth and male.
What is the difference between a squire and a knight? A squire was any boy from 14-20 years old who looked up to knight ad was a servant to them. After training and taking test at 21-22 years old, a squire can be come a full fledge knight and fight in wars.
Who were the three masters that they fought bravely for? Their lord, their god and their chosen lady.
How did knights gain experience in the Feudal Era? Knights gained experience through tournaments which were staged combats.
What were troubadours and why were they important? Troubadours were poet--musicians at the castles and courts of Europe. They were important because they played for lords, kings as a source of entertainment.
What were some of values that knights were taught? Bravery, honesty, respect, loyalty, and compassion were some of the values taught. THey were also taught to be courteous towards women
WHy was the church the most powerful institution? The church were the only educated people that were taught the Greek and Roman knowledge and who could read and write Latin and Greek.
What was the main goal of every person in the Middle Ages? To reach heaven by doing whatever they were told, not questioning anything or their position in life, and to be a good Christian.
What was the role of women in medieval society? To be inferior to men, as they told so by the church. They were to take care of their home and children.
Who was more powerful, the Pope or the King in ancient time and why? The had more power than the King/Monarch for most of the Middle Ages because they were educated and held the power of reaching heaven over the king and the people of his kingdom.
What would happen if a person went against,questioned, or challenged church teachings? Two extremely harsh punishments would be placed on an individual or on an entire kingdom to control their behavior.
What are the two punishments that are placed on an individual or kingdom for going against, question or challenge the church teachings? Excommunication and Interdiction meaning that the church will deny the person or kingdom some of their rights like going to church and having a proper burial.
What do some historians call the period in Western Europe between 500-1000 AD? The Dark Age
What percentage of a Christian yearly income did the Church get in the form of tithe? One-tenth.
How are freifs and monks different and similar in forms of vows Both monks and friends took vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, though unlike monks freifs did not live apart from the world.
What were some of characteristics of the Romanesque Architecture form in 800-110 AD? round arches, a heavy roof held up by thick walls., had very little light within the church, dark and gloomy andsmall in size
What was a Crusade and what was its purpose? A crusade was meant to gain back control of the Holy Land Palestine and the holy city of Jerusalem.
How many crusades were there and during what period were they fought over? Four crusades fought over 1096 and 1204 AD.
