Types of Reasoning

NBCOT Study

QuestionAnswer
o Procedural requires the systematic gathering and interpreting of data to identify problems, set goals, plan intervention, and implement treatment strategies.
o Interactive reasoning - focuses on the client as a person and involves the therapeutic relationship between the practitioner, the individual, caregivers, and significant others
o Pragmatic considers the context of service delivery including the person's situation and the practice environment to identify the real possibilities for the person in a given sitting.
o Conditional represents an integration of procedural, interactive. and pragmatic reasoning in the context of the client's narrative. Focuses on the past, present, and future.
o Narrative considers motives, meaning of the client's condition, and thinking in story form.
o Scientific- weighs the known and unknown
Ethical looks at what should be done
o Inductive the process of reasoning in which the assumption of an argument are believed to endorse the conclusion, but do not guarantee it. May start with observations and then lead to drawing conclusion about larger circumstances.
o Deductive the process of reasoning in which conclusions are drawn based on facts, laws, rules, or principles. Starts with information about larger circumstances, broader principles, and general theories and applies this knowledge to specific situations.
o Analytical- - the process of interpreting the meaning of information, determining relationships within the information presented, and then making assumptions about that information.
o Inferential- the process of drawing conclusions or making logical judgments based on facts, concepts, and evidence rather than direct observations.
o Evaluative the process by which the merits of an argument are weighed for their validity and the inherent value of the argument itself is critiqued.
