What is militarism? a buildup of military forces and weapons
What is an alliance? an agreement between countries to help each other
What is imperialism? when stronger countries take over weaker countries
What is nationalism? love of one's country
What was the spark that ignited World War I? the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
What were the two major alliances at the beginning of the war? The Allied Powers and the Central Powers
What countries made up the Allied Powers? Great Britain, France, Russia
What countries made up the Central Powers? Austria-Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria
What does it mean if a country is neutral in a war? They don't join either side
Give an example of a country that was neutral at the beginning of WWI? The United States, Italy
What is isolationism? Staying out of the affairs of other countries (particularly wars)
Who was the US President who ran on the slogan "He kept us out of war" but then later led the US into World War I? Woodrow Wilson
Why did the United States enter World War I? A German U-boat sank the Lusitania, which angered Americans. Also there was concern for US shipping and military vessels (ships) that caused the US to enter the war in 1917. Flying across the Atlantic wasn't an option because airplanes were just invented.
What was the impact of the US entering into WWI? It forced the Germans to retreat and surrender.
When did World War I begin? 1914 (but the US didn't enter until 1917)
When did World War I end? Germany surrendered on November 11th, 1918 (Armistice Day) Today we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th because of this.
When was the Treaty of Versailles signed? June of 1919
What was the Treaty of Versailles? The peace treaty that formally ended WWI in 1919
How did Germany feel about the Treaty of Versailles? They thought it was unfair. Germany had to take the blame for the entire war. They also received heavy punishments. They were embarrassed and wanted revenge for how they were punished through the treaty.
What were Germany's punishments in the Treaty of Versailles? 1. Taking blame for the war 2. paying reparations (millions of dollars to the countries that won) 3. giving up many colonies and territories 4. shrink its military and/or sell military supplies so they couldn't start another war
Who was responsible for making sure Germany followed through with its punishments? There was no single country responsible. Therefore Germany eventually rebuilt everything, setting the stage for another war (WWII).
What was the League of Nations? an international group of countries that were supposed to work together to solve future disputes and prevent another war (that didn't work out too well)
What was the affect of the sinking of the Lusitania? 128 Americans died and this angered the US, pushing it closer to war (the US did not join the war at this time)
What was the affect of the Germans continuing to US submarine warfare and the US using propaganda to encourage Americans to join WWI? Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany on April 2nd, 1917 so the US could join the Allied Powers
