Shoulder MMT

TermDefinition
Flexion AG Position (S) seated w/arm relaxed to the side of bod & hand facing backward
Flexion AG Stabilize Over shoulder being tested, but allow normal abduction & upward rotation of scapula
Flexion AG Palpate Anterior deltoid, coracobrachialis, supraspinatus
Flexion AG Observe (S) flexes shoulder joint to 90 degrees of flexion
Flexion AG Resist At distal end of humerus downward toward shoulder extension
Flexion AG Substitutions Shoulder abductors, trunk extension
Flexion GD Position (S) side-lying position. side being tested is superior
Flexion GD Stabilize Over shoulder to be tested
Flexion GD Palpate Anterior deltoid, coracobrachialis, supraspinatus
Flexion GD Observe (S) flexes shoulder joint to 90 degrees flexion
Extension AG Position (S) seated w/ shoulder joint adducted & internally rotated w/ palms facing up
Extension AG Stabilize Scapula
Extension AG Palpate Latissimus dorsi, teres major, posterior deltoid
Extension AG Observe (S) extends shoulder joint
Extension AG Resist At distal end of humerus & push downward toward flexion
Extension AG Substitutions Shoulder abductors, tipping shoulder forward
Extension GD Position (S) side lying, (E) stands behind (S)
Extension GD Stabilize Scapula
Extension GD Palpate Latissimus dorsi, teres major, posterior deltoid
Extension GD Observe (S) extending shoulder joint
Abduction AG Position (S) seated, w/ arms relaxed at sides of body; elbow on side to be tested should be slightly flexed & palms facing toward body. ( E) stands behind (S)
Abduction AG Stabilize Scapula
Abduction AG Palpate Middle deltoid, supraspinatus
Abduction AG Observe (S) abducts shoulder to 90 degrees; palm in neutral
Abduction AG Resist At distal end of humerus toward adduction
Abduction AG Substitution Long head of biceps may attempt to substitute
Abduction GD Position (S) lying supine w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees
Abduction GD Stabilize Trunk
Abduction GD Palpate Middle deltoid, supraspinatus
Abduction GD Observe (S) abducts shoulder to 90 degrees
Adduction AG Position (S) lying supine w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees
Adduction AG Stabilize Trunk
Adduction AG Palpate Pectoralis major, teres major, latissimus dorsi
Adduction AG Observe ( S) adducts humerus
Adduction AG Resist Medial side of distal end of humerus;pulls humerus away from patients
Adduction AG Substitution Shoulder abductors, tipping shoulder forward
Adduction GD Position (S) lying supine w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees
Adduction GD Stabilize Trunk
Adduction GD Palpate Pectoralis major, teres major, latissimus dorsi
Adduction GD Observe (S) adducts humerus
Horizontal abduction AG Position (S) prone w/ arm hanging over edge of table; shoulder abducted to 90 degrees; slight external rotation, elbow flexed to 90 degrees, & forearm perpendicular to floor
Horizontal abduction AG Stabilize Over the scapula
Horizontal abduction Palpate Posterior deltoid
Horizontal abduction AG Observe (S)horizontally abduct humerus, lifting arm toward ceiling
Horizontal abduction AG Resist (E) hand placed on posterior surface of distal end of humerus & pushes arm downward
Horizontal abduction AG Substitution Trunk rotation in sitting position
Horizontal abduction AG Position (S) seated w/ arm in 90 degrees of shoulder flexion, elbow extended w/ arm supported
Horizontal abduction GD Position (S) seated w/ arm in9 0 degrees of shoulder flexion, elbow extended w/arm supported
Horizontal abduction GD Stabilize Scapula
Horizontal abduction GD Palpate Posterior deltoid
Horizontal abduction GD Observe (S) horizontally abducts shoulder
Horizontal adduction AG Position (S) lying supine w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees, bow extended
Horizontal adduction AG Stabilize Scapula
Horizontal adduction AG Palpate Pectoralis major
Horizontal adduction AG Observe (S) horizontally adducts humerus to 90 degrees of shoulder flexion
Horizontal adduction AG Resist (E) hand placed on anterior surface of distal end of humerus; pushes arm backward toward horizontal abduction
Horizontal adduction AG Substitution Trunk rotation in sitting position
Horizontal adduction GD position ( S) seated w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees
Horizontal adduction GD Stabilize Scapula
Horizontal adduction GD Palpate Pectoralis major
Horizontal adduction GD Observe (S) horizontally adducts humerus
External rotation AG Position (S) prone w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees
External rotation AG Stabilize Humerus at elbow to allow only rotation
External rotation AG Palpate Infraspinatus, teres minor
External rotation AG Observe (S) rotates humerus; back of hand moves toward ceiling
External rotation AG Resist Distal forearm to floor in direction of internal rotation
External rotation AG Substitution Scapula rotation combined w/ downward rotation
External rotation GD Position (S) seated w/ arm adducted; in neutral rotation at shoulder, elbow flexed to 90 degrees w/ forearm in neutral position
External rotation GD Stabilize Arm against trunk at distal end of humerus
External rotation GD Palpate Infraspinatus, teres minor
External rotation GD Observe (S) moves forearm away from body by rotating humerus while maintaining neutral position of forearm
Internal rotation AG Position (S) lying prone w/ humerus abducted to 90 degrees & supported on table, elbow flexed to 90 degrees w/ forearm dangling over edge of table
Internal rotation AG Stabilize Humerus at elbow to allow only rotation
