What is myelography? | the study of the spinal cord & its nerve root branches |
What is a myelogram? | Contrast media is injected via lumbar or cervical puncture into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord under fluoroscopic guidance by a radiologist (or other physician) & images are obtained. |
Why is a myelogram done? | A myelogram is done when symptoms indicate that a lesion may be present within the spinal cord or is protruding into the canal. |
What are the most common pathologies identified on a myelogram? | a herniated or bulging vertebral disk, benign or malignant tumors, cysts, 7 bone fragments in the case of trauma. |
What modality has largely replaced myelography for evaluation of spinal cord & nerve pathology? | MRI |
Myelography is still done on patients who | cannot undergo an MRI, or for those patients who have a negative or inconclusive MRI & still exhibit symptoms. |
