Warsaw Pact Military alliance including Russia and most of the Eastern European Countries
NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization - a military alliance including USA, Canada, and many Western European Countries
cold war Was a sustained period of political and military tension between the United States with NATO and others and Russia with the Warsaw Pact and others
treaty An agreement between countries
Nazism Political system established by Adolf Hitler in Germany before WWII
economic depression A severe and long-tern downturn in the economy that results in high unemployment and business closures
stock market A place where stocks and bonds are "traded" – meaning bought and sold
Soviet Union Russia under the control of the communist party
communism Political system with a command economy and frequently an autocratic government
genocide The killing of a whole race of people
czar Emperor of Russia
central powers Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire during WWI
allied powers Countries fighting against the Central Powers in WWI
Militarism desire of a country to maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it
Nationalism The love of your country
superpower An extremely powerful nation, especially one capable of influencing international events and the acts and policies of less powerful nations
Imperialism The building of an empire
empire A country and the other countries it controls
Old World Europe, Asia, and Africa
New World North and South America
colony a territory under the control of another country, distinct from the home territory of that country
Pope The leader of the Roman Catholic church
crusade Christian holy war
