Idealogical terms

Definitions for basic political ideologies in the inter war period

QuestionAnswer
Socialism Based on the teachings of Karl Marx, this ideology argues the workers ought to control the means of production for a fairer more equal society.
Communism Revolution is needed to create a socialist society in which there is an end to private property, also opposed to religion.
Capitalism Individuals have the right to amass wealth and make profit through their ownership of property and the means of production.
Democracy People choose their government by voting in elections. There is freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and a free press.
Fascism A right wing political system where the military, the church, and the political leader are very powerful in all aspects of life. Nationalist, racist, and oppressive.
Dictatorship One individual has all the political power and bans other political parties, controls the media, arrests and often kills opponents. Dictatorships can be right wing (Mussolini, Hitler)or left wing (Stalin).
Right Wing government Conservative capitalist politics, at its most extreme:fascism.
Left Wing government Socialist politics, at its most extreme: communism.
