Figurative Language

Simile Comparing two items using like or as.
Hyperbole Expressing extreme exaggeration.
Idiom A phrase without literal meaning.
Rhyme Words which contain the same sounds.
Metaphor A direct, non-literal comparison made between two dissimilar objects, actions, or traits.
Alliteration The repetition of sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables.
Rhyme Scheme A pattern of rhyming words or lines (AABB, ABBA, etc.)
Onomatopoeia Naming a thing or action by imitating the sound associated with it.
Personification Giving human qualities to non-human things.
Imagery Creating a mental picture using words that appeal to any of the five senses.
Oxymoron A phrase of terms that contradicts each other.
Pun A play on words with humorous intent.
