Question | Answer |
Electromagnetic Spectrum | Range of electromagnetic waves; includes radio waves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet waves, X-rays, and gamma rays |
Radio Waves | Have the lngest wavelength and shirtest frquesncy; used for radio, television, and radar |
Infrared Rays | You cannot see these waves, but you can feel them as heat |
Ultraviolet Rays | These waves are present in the sunlight; They can cause sunburn; are used to kill bacteria |
X-rays | These waves have a very short wavelength and a very high frequency; They can pass through most solid objects; They are used in medicine to form images of banes and internal organs |
Gamma Rays | These have a shorter wavelength and a higher frequency than X-rays; They are given off during nuclear reactions |
Medium | Substance through which waves can travel |
Waves | Disturbances that transfer energy from place to place |
Compression | Part of a medium where the particles are close together |
Crest | high point of a wave |
Longitudinal Wave | Wave in which the particles of the medium move back and forth in the direction of the wave motion |
Rarefaction | Part of a medium where the particles are far apart |
Transverse Wave | wave in which the particles of the medium move up and down at right angles to the direction of the wave motion |
Trough | Low point of a wave |
Amplitude | height of a wave |
Frequency | Number of complete waves passing a point in a given time |
Hertz | Unit used to meaure the frequency of a wave |
Doppler Effect | Apparent change in frequency of waves |
