mid-latitude climate | temperate climate (think seasons)extend from 231/2degrees north to 60 degrees north and from 23 1/2 degrees south to 60 degrees south |
ocean | one of the four major bodies of salt water that surround the continents |
highland climate | cool or cold climate that varies with elevation (like high up in the mountains) |
tropical climate | warm year round extends from the equator top the Tropic of Cancer (23 1/2 degrees noth) and from the equator to the Tropic of Capricorn (23 1/2 degrees south) |
prevailing wind | movements of air that travel around the earth in a typical pattern |
plateau | area of flat or rolling land at a high elevation about 300-3000 feet high |
peninsula | body of land jutting into a lake or ocean, surrounded on three sides by water |
plains | area of level land, usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses |
physical feature | characyeristic of a place occuring naturally, such as a landform, body of water, climate pattern, or resorce |
river | large natural stream of water that runs through the land |
sea | large body of water partially or completely surrounded by land |
dry climate | dry to partially dry areas with little to no rain; temperatures can range from very cold to very hot |
typhoon | name for a hurricane in Asia |
tornado | funnel-shaped windstorm; sometimes forms during a thunderstorm |
tropics | low lattitude region between th eTropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn |
weather | unpredicable changes in the air that take place in a short period of time |
strait | narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water |
volcano | moutains= created as liquid rock and ash erupt from inside the earth |
valley | area of lowland between hills and moutains |
