| Word | Definition |
| SCIENCE | The knowledge gained by observing natural events to discover facts and formulate theories and laws. |
| SCIENTIFIC METHOD | Steps scientists use to solve problems. |
| OBSERVATION | Any use of the senses to gather information. |
| HYPOTHESIS | A possible answer or explanation to a question. |
| CONTROLLED PARAMETERS | The factors that are kept the same in a controlled experiment |
| VARIABLE PARAMETERS | The one factor that changes between the groups in a controlled experiment. |
| DATA | Any piece of information gotten through an experiment. |
| MASS | The amount of matter in an object. |
| MATTER | The stuff everything is made of. |
| VOLUME | The amount of space something occupies. |
| DENSITY | Mass per unit volume. |
| TEMPERATURE | Measure of how hot or cold something is. |
| MODEL | A representation of an object or system. |
| THEORY | An explanation for many hypothesis and observations that have been supported by testing. |
| LAW | A summary of many experimental results and observations, tells how something works. |
| INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | In an experiment the factor that is deliberately changed. |
| DEPENDENT VARIABLE | In an experiment the factor that changes as a result of one or more factors being changed. |
| X and Y AXIS | In a graph the x axis is the horizontal line and the y axis is the vertical line. |
| LINEAR GRAPH | On a graph when the relationship between the independent and dependent variable is a straight line. |
| NONLINEAR GRAPH | On a graph then the relationship between variables is not a straight line. |
| MEAN | Average. |
| MEDIAN | The value of the data point in the middle when data are placed in order from smallest to largest. |
| MODE | The most frequently occuring number in the data. |
| SLOPE | The measure of the slant of a line; the ration of rise over run. |
| HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL | Horizontal a line going left to right and vertical is a line going up and down. |
