cropping | the cutting or marking of a photogragh to eliminate unnessary material and highlight important elements |
rule of thirds | a method of composing photographs in which the field of vision is divided into thirds horizontally and vertically and the image is placed at the intersection of any two lines |
halftone | a screen that prepares a photographic image for reproduction by converting it into a series of tiny dots |
sizing | reducing or enlarging a cropped photo to fit exactly a space on the layout |
photo essay | a story told-generally involving three to seven photographs with captions |
lens | the part of the camera through which the light enters, is sharpened and is transmitted to the film. |
aperture | in a camera, the lens opening that controls how much light gets through the shutter |
exposure | in photography, the amount of light that strikes the film |
f-stop | a scale that indicates the aperture in numbers. the lower the number the wider the aperture |
flash-synch speed | the faster the shutter speed that can be used with a flash to obtain a properly exposed picture |
back lighting | having the light source behind the subject instead of behind the photography |
digital camera | a camera that transmits electronic images onto a disk for printing from a computer rather than onto film |
darkroom | a room having little or no light, in which film can be developed |
fixer | in photography development, a bath that sets a film or print image permanently |
enlarger | a device used to shine light through a negative, magnifying the image onto light-sensitive photographic paper, where the image is focused and imprinted |
test strip | in photo development, a series of print strips made at different exposures to determine the most appropriate one for the final print |
ISO | a standard measure of the speed film. a film with a higher ISO is more light sensitive than one with a lower ISO |
depth of field | the area of clear focus in front of and behind the subject of the photography |
shutter speed | in a camera, a scale that indicates how fast the shutter opens and closes, measured in fractions of a second |
camera-ready copy | text prepared so that the headlines, body type, and art are already set, positioned, and ready to be photographed |
copywriter | one who writes material for advertisizing |
optical center | a point about two thirds of the way up from the bottom of an add |
news release | information about an organization provided to the news media by that organization |
public relations | the communication of information from an organization, company, or group to some particular audience to achieve a specific response |
