PROTAGONIST | the character that *moves the story forward* |
DYNAMIC | a character that *changes* somehow in the story. |
ANTAGONIST | the *adversary* of the protagonist (goes against) |
FLAT CHARACTER | a character *we do not know much* about |
STATIC CHARACTER | a character who *does not change* |
CONFLICT | a *problem* faced by the character(s) |
DICTION | *word choice* for a certain effect |
DENOTATIVE | *definition*. the word's meaning |
CONNOTATION | the *feeling* implied by the word |
FLASHBACK | to interrupt the action to *look back* |
FORESHADOWING | *hints* about the answer of the conflict/ what is to come |
IMAGERY | *descriptive*. sensory writing |
MOOD | the atmosphere or *main emotion* |
EXPOSITION | the *introduction*, what happens before the action begins |
DENOEMENT (note: that is note DENOUNCEMENT) | final *wrapping up* of the story |
RHETORICAL SHIFT | a *realization* or change in thinking of the reader or character, the "lightbulb going off" |
SYNTAX | the *arrangement* of words ex. Sarah said vs. said Sarah |
ALLUSION | a reference to something outside the story |
HYPERBOLE | extreme *exaggeration* |
VERBAL IRONY | saying one thing and *meaning another* |
SITUATIONAL IRONY | then a situation turns out *different than expected* |
DRAMATIC IRONY | a character saying something that is not ironic to him, but is ironic to the reader and other characters |
MOTIF | a *recurring image* happening throughout the story |
SARCASM (the key to life) | saying one thing and *meaning another* |
SATIRE | *poking fun* at something in order to expoe human folly or a societal problem. |
