Geography | the study of the Earth and the ways people live and work on it |
Absolute Location | the position of a place on the Earth's surface |
Hemisphere | half of a sphere on a globe, as in the Earth's Northern and Southern Hemispheres |
Equator | an imaginary line around the Earth a circle that is the the same distance from each of the poles |
Prime Meridian | the meridian of 0 degrees longitude the runs through the original site of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. |
latitude | imaginary lines running east and west around the globe that are used to measure the distance north and south of the equator in degrees; also called parallel lines |
longitude | imaginary vertical lines running pole to pole on the globe,used to measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian; also called meridians |
relative location | where a place is located in relation to other places |
key | part of a map that explains the symbols used on a map |
compass rose | directional marker on a map |
scale | the relationship of measuring on a map to actual measurement in ft,miles, meter, or kilometer on the earth's surface |
physical map | a map which show countries terrain |
political map | a map which shows countries borders and main cities |
topography | physical features of the earth's surface |
relief | differences in elevation, or height, on land |
contour line | lines tht connect points of land at the same elevation |
great circle | shortest distance between two places on the earth's surface |
map projections | way of drawing a map to represent the rounded eath on a flat surface |
graph | way of projecting and comparing information visually, as in line graph, bar graph, or circle graph |
chart | visual presentation of data in rows and columns |
table | set of data in rows and columns |
diagram | drawings that show what something is or how something is done, such as the steps of a process or a cycle |
