| Encoding | Translate information into a form in which it can be stored |
| Storage | maintaining the encoded information over a period of time. |
| Retrieval | Locating stored info and return it to conscious thought. |
| 3 stages of memory | Sensory, Mental images, sound memory, short term memory |
| Sensory | Immediate sensory acknowledgement of information if you want to keep it you have to do something with it quick. |
| Mental Images | Use mental pictures you form in your head they are held in the iconic memory for a fraction of a second they are "snapshots" and very accurate |
| Sound Memory | echos can be remembered echoic imagery can last for a few seconds |
| Short Term Memory | Even noting iconic and echoic memory you transfer it into your short term memory |
