Math Vocabulary | Definition |
simplify | to write a fraction or an expression in simplest form |
factor tree | a diagram showing the prime factorization of a number |
percent (%) | the ratio of a number to 100 |
proportion | a mathematical sentence stating that two ratios are equal |
rate | a ratio in which two quantities with different units of measure are compared |
ratio | a comparison of two quantities |
unit rate | the price for one unit of measure |
circle graph | a round graph that uses pie-shaped sections to show percents or parts of the whole |
congruent | having the same size and shape |
line symmetry | a figure has line summetry if a line can divide the figure into two congruent parts |
polygon | a closed figure made of line segments |
regular polygon | a polygon in which all sides are the same length and all angles have the same measure |
quadrilateral | a 4 sides polygon |
parallelogram | a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and congruent |
rhombus | a parallelogram whose four sides are congruent and whose opposite side angles are congruent |
line | a straight path that extends infinitely in opposite directions |
ray | a part of a line that has one endpoint and exends infinitely in the other direction |
line segment | a part of a line with two endpoints |
midpoint | the point on a line segment that divides it into two congruent parts |
parallel lines | two lines in the same plane that never intersect |
intersecting lines | two lines that cross at exactly the same point |
perpendicular lines | lines that intersect at one point and form right angles |
obtuse angle | an angle with a measure of more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees |
right angle | an angle with a measure of 90 degrees |
straight angle | an angle whose measure is 180 degrees |
acute angle | an angle that measures greater than 0 degrees and less than 90 degrees |
acute triangle | a triangle with 3 acute angles |
equilateral triangle | a triangle with 3 equal sides |
isosceles triangle | a triangle with 2 congruent sides |
obtuse triangle | a triangle with one obtuse angle |
right triangle | a triangle with one right angle |
scalene triangle | a triangle with no congruent sides |
circumference | the distance around a circle |
diameter | a line segment that passes through the center of a circle and has its endpoint on the circle |
radius | a line segment from the center of the circle to any point on the circle |
Pi | the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter |
