Math VocabularyDefinition
simplify to write a fraction or an expression in simplest form
factor tree a diagram showing the prime factorization of a number
percent (%) the ratio of a number to 100
proportion a mathematical sentence stating that two ratios are equal
rate a ratio in which two quantities with different units of measure are compared
ratio a comparison of two quantities
unit rate the price for one unit of measure
circle graph a round graph that uses pie-shaped sections to show percents or parts of the whole
congruent having the same size and shape
line symmetry a figure has line summetry if a line can divide the figure into two congruent parts
polygon a closed figure made of line segments
regular polygon a polygon in which all sides are the same length and all angles have the same measure
quadrilateral a 4 sides polygon
parallelogram a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and congruent
rhombus a parallelogram whose four sides are congruent and whose opposite side angles are congruent
line a straight path that extends infinitely in opposite directions
ray a part of a line that has one endpoint and exends infinitely in the other direction
line segment a part of a line with two endpoints
midpoint the point on a line segment that divides it into two congruent parts
parallel lines two lines in the same plane that never intersect
intersecting lines two lines that cross at exactly the same point
perpendicular lines lines that intersect at one point and form right angles
obtuse angle an angle with a measure of more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees
right angle an angle with a measure of 90 degrees
straight angle an angle whose measure is 180 degrees
acute angle an angle that measures greater than 0 degrees and less than 90 degrees
acute triangle a triangle with 3 acute angles
equilateral triangle a triangle with 3 equal sides
isosceles triangle a triangle with 2 congruent sides
obtuse triangle a triangle with one obtuse angle
right triangle a triangle with one right angle
scalene triangle a triangle with no congruent sides
circumference the distance around a circle
diameter a line segment that passes through the center of a circle and has its endpoint on the circle
radius a line segment from the center of the circle to any point on the circle
Pi the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter
