| Term | Definition |
| Compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture. |
| Chemical formula | a mathematical relationship or rule expressed in symbols. |
| Octet rule | the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell |
| Chemical bond | a connection between two surfaces or objects that have been joined together, especially by means of an adhesive substance, heat, or pressure |
| Ionic bond | a chemical bond between oppositely charged ions |
| Ions | An ion is a small electrically charged particle. |
| Oxidation number | a number assigned to an element in chemical combination which represents the number of electrons lost (or gained, if the number is negative), by an atom of that element in the compound. |
