| cartouche | A carved tablet representing a scroll (a roll of paper) with rolled up ends |
| harpoon | A barbed spear, used for hunting large fish |
| hieroglyphics | Writing made up of pictographic (picture) symbols |
| Khemet | Ancient Egyptian name for their land (It means “Black Land”) |
| levees | A bank (high pile of dirt) built along a river to prevent flooding |
| mummification | The process of preserving the bodies of the dead |
| nobles | People belonging to a high class that have special social or political status |
| obelisks | A four-sided pillar that ends in a pyramid, used as a monument |

| peasants | People in a low ranking social class, who often worked in the fields |

| social pyramid | Shows each social class in order of importance |
