Khemet | Ancient Egyptian name for their land (It means “Black Land”) |
levees | A bank (high pile of dirt) built along a river to prevent flooding |
mummification | The process of preserving the bodies of the dead |
nobles | People belonging to a high class that have special social or political status |
obelisks | A four-sided pillar that ends in a pyramid, used as a monument |
papyrus | A plant that is made into strips and pressed into material on which a person can write |
peasants | People in a low ranking social class, who often worked in the fields |
Pharaoh | The ruler of ancient Egypt |
pyramid | A huge structure that was used as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh and high officials |
shaduf | A bucket device for lifting water from the river |
social pyramid | Shows each social class in order of importance |
Sphinx | Ancient Egyptian monument with the body of a lion and the head of a man. It guards the Great Pyramid of Giza |
vizier | A high official in the government, usually the advisor to the Pharaoh |
