| CHAPTER 6 TERMS | Definition |
| mastectomy | Removal of one or both breast or breast tissue, to get rid of cancer |
| speculum | A tool inserted into the vagina by a doctor for a vaginal exam |
| bimanual exam | The doctor inserts two fingers into the vagina (basically fingering you), while the other hand is on lower abdomen. They check for any abnormalities. |
| cervical cancer | Cancer in the cervix, usually occurs when a women hasn’t had a Pap smear within the last 5 years |
| scabies | Very small mites that go under your skin, causes rash & is veryyyy itchy |
| pubic lice (crabs) | Small parasitic insects that attach to your pubes, causes itching |
| human papillomavirus (HPV) | An STI that is a main cause of cervical cancer (warts on genital areas) |
| testicular cancer | Cancer in the balls (common in younger men, begins in one testicle first) |
| digital rectal exam | The doctor inserts two fingers inside the butt to feel the size of the prostate glad (also basically fingering you) |
| pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) | Inflammation of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries (super painful for women, comes from untreated STIs) |
| AIDS | late-stage infection of HIV |
| Opportunistic infections | A group of infections (come from having a weak immune system from HIV) |
| Gonorrhea - symptoms | “The clap” MEN: Burning while peeing/pooping, discharge from anus, penis WOMEN: no noticeable symptoms (but can be: cloudy discharge, irritation while peeing, vaginal peeing between periods) |
| Chlamydia - frequency | “Silent infection” , 75% of infected women and 50% of infected men have reported to have no symptoms |
| chancre | A firm, small, and round sore (pimple) — painless, they grow where syphilis entered the body |
| syphilis – symptoms, conseq. | ”Great imitator” (you can barely tell the difference from other infections) SYMPTOMS: chancre sore appears, skin rash/lesions, fever, sore throat, weight loss, fatigue etc. CONSEQUENCES: damage to internal organs, dementia, death etc. |
| Herpes – symptoms, spreading | Sores on the mouth & genitals (they come back) SYMPTOMS: fever, swollen glands, SORES |
| Hepatitis – symptoms | “Inflammation of the liver” SYMPTOMS: fatigue, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, JAUNDICE |
| General STI risk factors | Having unprotected sex, skin-to-skin contact, sharing needles, mother-to-child transmission, blood transfusion/organ transplants |
| HIV | a virus that destroys the immune system through AIDS |
