| Franz Gall and Phrenology | He proposed that phrenology could reveal a person’s underlying brain size and associated mental abilities and character traits |
| Localization of function | this is the idea that various brain regions have functions |
| Biopsychosocial systems | we are a system composed of subsystems that ae in turn composed of even smaller subsystems |
| Neuron | A nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system |
| dendrites | A neurons often bushy branching extensions that receive and integrate messages |
| Cell body | A part of a neuron that contains the nucleus |
| Axon | The neuron extension that passes messages through its branches to other neurons or to muscles or glands |
| Myelin Sheath | A fatty tissue layer segmentally encasing the axons of some neurons |
| Glial cells | Cells in the nervous system that support, nourish, and protect neurons |
| Synapse | A junction between the axon tip of the sending neuron |
| Action Potential | A neural impulse |
| Threshold | The level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse |
| Refractory period | A brief resting pause that occurs after a neuron has been fired |
| All-or-none response | A neurons reaction of either firing or not firing |
| Reuptake | A neurotransmitters re absorption by the sending neuron |
| Neurotransmitters | The chemical messengers that cross synaptic gaps between neurons |
| Acetylcholine (Ach) | This enables muscle action, learning, and memory |
| Dopamine | This influences movement, learning, attention, and emotion |
| Serotonin | This affects mood, hunger, sleep and arousal |
| Norepinephrine | This helps control alertness and arousal |
| GABA | This is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter |
| Glutamate | This is a major excitatory neurotransmitter involved in memory |
| Endorphins | Neurotransmitters that influence the perception of pain of pleasure |
| Agonists | This is a molecule that increases a neurotransmitters action |
| Antagonists | This is a molecule that inhabits or blocks a neurotransmitters action |
