| Term | Definition |
| tundra | treeless regions found in the arctic and on the tops of mountains, where climate is cold, windy, and rainfall is minimal |
| tributary | A freshwater stream that flows into a larger stream, river, or body of water |
| strait | a narrow waterway that connects two large bodies of water |
| swamp | a low-lying land permanently saturated with water |
| sound | a smaller body of water connected to a sea or an ocean. It usually lies between an island and the mainland |
| reservoir | a man-made lake, sometimes formed by a dam |
| mesa | an isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides |
| plateau | an area of flat high land |
| plain | a large area that is flat with no to few trees |
| peninsula | a piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land that connects two larger landmasses and separates two bodies of water |
| harbor | a sheltered area along a coast where ships can safely anchor |
| gulf | a deep inlet of the sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth |
| glacier | a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles |
| geyser | a hot spring in which water intermittently boils sending a tall column of water and steam into the air |
| fjord | a long, deep, narrow body of water that reaches far inland. They are created by glaciers |
| delta | The flat, low-lying plain that sometimes forms at the mouth of a river from deposits of sediments |
| channel | a wide strait or waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other |
| cape | a high point of land that extends into a river, lake, or ocean |
| canyon | a deep narrow valley with steep sides. Formed from flooding rivers and moving water |
| canal | A human-made waterway that allows boats and ships to pass from one body of water to another |
| butte | tall, flat-topped, steep-sided towers of rock |
| bay | a body of water partly surrounded by land |
| basin | a depression, or dip, in the Earth’s surface. They are shaped like bowls, with sides higher than the bottom |
| archipelago | A group of islands |
| atoll | ringed shaped island made of a coral reef enclosing a lagoon |
