| Elevation | The height of a physical feature above sea level. |
| subcontinent | Separate region of a continent. |
| Sustainable | Capable of being continued without damaging the environment or using up resources permanently. |
| Subsistence farmers | Farmers who grow their own food for their families to eat not sell. |
| Conservation | The protection of the environment. |
| Plate | A rigid section of the Earth's crust that can move independently. |
| Sanitation | Measures such as sewers to protect public health. |
| Drought | A long period with little or no precipitation. |
| Ecosystem | A community of living organisms and their natural environment, or habitat. |
| Delta | An area where a river deposits sediment as it empties into a larger body of water. |
| Famine | A long period of food shortage. |
| Monsoon | A seasonal wind that brings intense rainfall during part of the year. |
| Pollution | A chemical or physical waste that creates an unclean or dirty environment. |
| Evaporation | The process of water turning into vapor and rising into the atmosphere due to the sun's heating, part of the hydrologic cycle. |
| Aquifer | A layer of rock beneath Earth that contains water. |
| Arable | Fertile suitable for farming. |
| Isolation | Separation or being set apart from others. |
| Civil disobedience | The nonviolent disobeying of laws. |
| Reincarnation | The birth of the soul into another physical life. |
| Deity | A god or goddess. |
| Empire | A group or states ruled by a strong single ruler. |
| Caste system | A social structure in India composed of four main levels which was started by the Aryans. |
| Cultural Hearth | Center of civilization from which ideas and technology spread. |
| Tolerance | Acceptance of others' beliefs. |
| Colonialism | The practice of one country directly ruling a developing trade in a foreign territory for its own benefit. |
| Symbol | An object or idea that can be used to represent another object or idea. |
