| Term | Definition |
| Medieval Times | The centuries between the downfall of the Roman empire and the beginning of the modern world in the 15th and 16th centuries. |
| Middle Ages | Approximately 500AD-1500AD |
| Feudalism | System of ownership and control of land introduced by the Normans |
| Knight | Specially trained fighters in the Middle Ages |
| Peasant | The poorest class of people in the Middle Ages. Peasants were either freemen or serfs. Freemen were paid a money rent and could move whereever they wanted. |
| Vassal | A servant of the Lord |
| Serf | Serfs were peasants that were not free. They needed the permission of the Lord to travel. |
| Fief | A piece of land entrusted to someone for their use |
| Apprentice | Trainee craftsman. This training started at 14 years of age |
| Dowry | Money paid by a bride to her groom's family on their wedding day. |
| Page | The first stage in the training to be a Knight. Trainee knights became a page at 7. |
| Squire | The second stage in the training to be a Knight. Trainee knights became squires at age 14. |
| Chivalry | Code of conduct followed by Knights |
| Manor | A medieval village and the land around it |
| Tithe | A tax paid by peasants to the local parish priest. |
| Guild | An organisation that controlled the business of a craft or trade. |
| Black Death | A plague that spread across Europe in the middle ages |
| Chronology | The study of time and dates |
| Source | A thing or place from which something arises |
| Evidence | Proof of something |
| Useful | Something that helps you or gives you more information about a topic |
| Reliable | something that is likely to be true or correct |
| Fallow | Land allowed to lay idle for a year so that it can recover |
