Fluent Aphasia | Word output and speech production is functional but speech is "jargon" and "empty". No substance to speech - use of paraphasis (substitution of incorrect words) |
Wernicke's Aphasia | "Major Fluent Aphasia" aka receptive aphasia. Good articulation, but use of paraphasias and neoglogism (made up words) Reading and auditory is impaired. Can form words without difficulty but cannot understand. |
Non Fluent Aphasia | Poor word output and poor articulation. Increased effort for speech production |
Broca's Aphasia | "Major Non-Fluent Aphasia" aka expressive aphasia. This is the most common form. Intact reading and auditory. Frequent frustration regarding naming skills. Patient will sometimes use one word over and over again with variation in tone. |
