Term | Definition |
Kinetic Energy | Energy in motion (or energy being used) |
Potential Energy | Stored Energy |
Gravitational Potential Energy | Stored energy due to position (increasing height or mass increases GPE) (example: a roller coaster at the top of a hill) |
Thermal Energy | Kinetic Energy - also called heat energy. Molecules are moving faster as thermal energy increases (example: heat from a fire) |
Motion Energy (mechanical Energy) | Kinetic Energy of physical movement - Increasing speed or mass increases KE (a roller coaster rolling down a hill) |
Electric Energy (current) | Kinetic energy - movement of electrons (electricity running to power your TV) |
Light Energy (radiant energy) | Kinetic Energy - movement of electromagnetic waves (light from a light bulb or the sun) |
Chemical Energy | Potential Energy - stored in bonds of molecules (examples: food, gasoline) |
Sound Energy | Kinetic Energy - molecules moving as sound waves (example: cheering at a football game) |
Nuclear Energy | Potential Energy - energy stored in the nucleus of an atom (Example: hydrogen in a hydrogen bomb) |
Electric Energy (Static) | Potential Energy - energy stored in a buildup of electric charge in an object (Example: shuffling your socks across carpet) |
Elastic Energy | Potential Energy - energy stored in a compressed or stretched object (example: a stretched out rubber band or a smashed sponge) |
Conservation of Energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only rearranged |
