| Term | Definition |
| Tragedy | Drama that ends in catastrophe - most often death – and follows the journey of a tragic hero (protagonist) |
| Soliloquy | When a character speaks out loud to him/herself, which shares his/her thoughts with the audience. |
| Monologue | A speech given by a single person to an audience. |
| Aside | A line spoken from one character to another heard by the audience but not by all the characters on stage |
| Iambic Pentameter | A line with a specific rhythm of 5 sets of unstressed/stressed syllable pairs |
| Pun | A form of word play that suggests two or more meanings, by exploiting multiple definitions of words, or of similar sounding words, for intended humorous effect |
| Sonnet | A poem of 14 lines written in ABAB CDCD EFEF GG |
