| Term | Definition |
| control | The substance, object or group of things in an experiment that are not changed. |
| controlled experiment | An experiment where all variables are kept the same except for the one being tested. |
| force | A push or a pull that can change the position and/or motion of an object. |
| friction | A force that acts in an opposite direction to motion. Resists, or slows motion. |
| gravity | The force that pulls objects toward each other. Objects with greater mass have more than those with lesser mass. |
| magnetism | The force that pulls certain metals (steel, nickel, iron, or cobalt) across a distance. |
| motion | A change in position of an object. |
| position | The place where something is located or has been put. |
| pull | A force that moves something toward or with you. |
| push | A force that moves something away from you. |
| reliability | In an experiment, this is determined by repeated trials and how often the same results are achieved. |
| testable hypothesis | A prediction that can be tested by experiment or observation. |
| valid conclusion | We make this when we analyze and describe what was learned from an experiment based on data. |
| variable | Any part of an experiment that is changed. Scientists change one at a time to determine the effects of the change. |
| meter stick | A tool used to measure length. |
| data | The information we collect during an experiment that is recorded on a table, or chart. |
| increase | To get more of or to go higher. |
| decrease | To have less or go down |
| table | Another word for a chart where we record information during an experiment. |
| repeated trials | These give scientists a bigger picture and more reliable data. |
