Term | Definition |
Airway Adjuncts | Mechanical device that maintains or protects airway; provide mechanical ventilation or airway clearance; oral pharyngeal, nasal pharyngeal, endotracheal and tracheostomy |
Airway Suctioning | Mechanical aspiration of secretions from the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and trachea using a suction catheter; indicated by thick increased mucus that cannot be cleared |
Lung Transplant | Replace 1-2 failing lungs; end stage COPD,interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis but not serious comorbidities |
Mechanical Ventilation | Breathing assistance from a positive pressure mechanical ventilator; positive pressure forces air into lungs and increases intrathoracic pressure; connected to patient by mask or tracheostomy tube |
Oxygen Therapy | Liquid or gaseous oxygen supplement for patients at 88% or less O2 saturation or certain conditions |
Thoracotomy | Surgical incision to access heart, great vessels, lungs, esophagus, and diaphragm for surgical and therapeutic purposes; cut can be axillary, sternal, posterolateral or under breast (anterolateral) |
Tracheostomy | Surgical hole through trachea below vocal cords; used for airway obstruction at or above level of larynx or respiratory failure requiring prolonged ventilation mechanically; can be surgically closed when no longer needed. |
