| Unicameral | A legislature with one house or part |
| Bicameral | A legislature with two houses or parts |
| Federal System | The sharing of power between state and federal governments |
| Preamble | The opening section f the constitution |
| Popular Sovereignty | Government that is completely controlled by the people |
| Checks and Balances | A system in which each branch of government is able to check, or restrain, the power of others |
| Amend | A change to the Constitution |
| Suffrage | Right to vote |
| Segregation | The social split of races |
| Civil Rights | The rights of full citizenship and equality under the law |
| Boycotts | To refuse to buy or ban |
| Separation of Powers | Each branch has it's own responsibilities and prevents the others from getting too powerful |
