capacity | the amount of space occupied by a 3-dimensional figure, same as volume |
volume | the amount of space occupied by a 3-dimensional figure, same as capacity |
coordinate | one of the numbers in an ordered pair that located a point on a coordinate grid |
coordinate grid | the grid formed by two number lines intersecting at right angles, used to find points on a plane with ordered number pairs |
cubic centimeter | a metric unit of volume or capacity equal to the volume of a cube with 1-centimeter edges |
cubic unit | any cube used to measure volume |
cup | A U.S. customary unit of volume or capacity, equal to 8 fluid ounces of 1/2 pint |
face | a 2-dimensional surface on a 3-dimensional shape |
formula | a general rule for finding the value of something |
height | perpendicular distance from base to top |
latitude | a degree measure locating a place on Earth north or south of the equator; lines that run east and west around the globe |
longitude | a degree measure locating a place on Earth east or west of the prime meridian; lines that run north and south around the globe |
ordered number pair | two numbers, or coordinates, used to locate a point on a coordinate grid |
liter | a metric unit of volume or capacity equal to the volume of a cube with 10-centimeter long edges |
origin | zero on a number line or coordinate grid |
perpendicular | two lines or planes that intersect at right angles |
prism | a 3-dimensional figure with two parallel and congruent bases that give the prism its name, along with lateral rectangular faces |
quart | a U.S. customary unit of volume or capacity equal to 32 fluid ounces, 2 points, or 4 cups |
rectangle method | a strategy for finding the area of a polygon in which one or more rectangles are drawn around all of parts of the polygon through its vertices |
reflection | a transformation in which the image of a figure is a mirror image of the figure over a line of reflection (flip) |
translation | a transformation in which every point in the image of a figure is at the same distance in the same direction from its corresponding point in the figure (slide) |
square unit | a unit to measure area |
variable | a letter or other symbol that represents a number |
apex | the vertex opposite of the base; in a pyramid or a cone |
base of a pyramid or cone | the face that is opposite the apex |
calibrate | to divide or mark a measuring tool with units to measure |
cone | a 3-dimensional figure with a circular base and an apex |
cylinder | a 3-dimensional figure with two congruent, parallel circular bases and a curved face |
edge | a line segment or curve where two surfaces of a geometric solid meet |
geometric solid | the surface(s) that make up a 3-dimensional figure; does not include the interior |
polyhedron | any 3-dimensional solid that is formed by a polygon |
pyramid | a 3-dimensional figure made up of any polygonal region for a base and an apex |
sphere | the shell of a 3-dimensional figure created by a set of points that are an equal distance from a fixed point called the center |
surface | the top or outside of something |
surface area | the area of the surface of a 3-dimensional figure; the sum of the area of all faces |
vertex | the point where rays or line segments meet |
