addition | is used when you want to combine amounts |
sum | the answer to an addition problem |
total | the answer to an addition problem |
subtraction | is used when you want to find the difference between amounts |
difference | the answer to a subtraction problem |
multiplication | is used when you want to combine the same amount multiple times |
product | the answer to a multiplication problem |
division | is used when you want to find how many equal parts an amount can be divided into |
dividend | the amount being divided |
divisor | the number you are dividing by |
quotient | the answer to a division problem |
integer | any whole number |
even number | any number that can be divided exactly by 2 (no remainder) |
odd number | any number than is NOT divisible by 2 (it would have a remainder) |
divisible | a number is divisible by another number if you can divide by that number and have no remainder |
factors | numbers that multiply to make a certain product |
multiple | the product of both factors in a problem |
prime number | a number that has exactly 2 factors, itself and 1. |
composite number | a number that has more than 2 factors |
greatest common factor | the greatest number that you can divide evenly into all numbers in a given set |
commutative property (works only with addition or multiplication) | you can add or multiply numbers in any order, and the result will be the same |
associative property (works with addition or multiplication) | it allows you to change how numbers are grouped |
distributive property (works with addition and multiplication as well as subtraction) | example: a(b+c) = ab + ac OR a(b-c) = ab-ac |
positive number (in multiplication or division) | both numbers are positive OR both numbers are negative (both are the same sign) |
negative number (in multiplication or division) | one positive and one negative number |
absolute value | a number's distance from zero |
power | used to show repeated multiplication of the same number |
square | a number raised to the second power |
cube | a number raised to the third power |
