| Term | Definition |
| Psychological disorder | patterns of thoughts, feelings, or actions that are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional |
| Disorder | a state of mental/ behavioral ill health |
| Patterns | collection of symptoms that tend to go together |
| Distress and Dysfunction | symptoms sufficiently severe to interfere with one's daily life and well being. |
| Deviant | differing from the norm/ different from what would be expected in that culture. |
| Internalizing symptoms | characterized by quiet, internal distress; depressive and anxiety disorders (separation anxiety disorder, OCD, panic); they are harder to detect because they don't affect the environment (can't detect worry or fear) |
| Externalizing symptoms | characterized by overtly, socially negative disruptive behavior (problematic for parents, teachers, etc); disruptive, impulse-control and conduct behaviors (ODD and CD); usually more noticeable and are those that can affect behavior (hyperactive) |
| Neurodevelopmental Disorders | result in structural differences in the brain (apparent in early child development) => impairments of personal, social, academic, or occupational functioning (eg. Autism, ADHD, language disorder, ID, etc) |
| Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) | excessive fear concerning separation from attachment figures. |
| ADHD | Persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning/development |
| Equifinality | divergent pathways resulting in a similar outcome (ADHD has multiple causes and effects) |
| Autism Spectrum Disorder | deficits in social communication and social interactions, deficits in: social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication, and in developing, maintaining and understanding relationships; have restricted, repetitive patterns |
