Term | Definition |
Symbols | These are drawings that stand for something. |
Cardinal directions | North, south, east and west |
Oceans | The largest bodies of water. There are four of these. |
Globe | This is a round model of the earth. It is in the shape of a sphere. |
Longitude and latitude lines | These create a grid around the Earth that helps us locate places on the globe. |
Intermediate directions | Northeast, Southeast, northwest, and southwest. |
Map | A drawing of the place as you would see it from above. |
Continents | The largest bodies of land on Earth. There are seven of them. |
Grid | This divides the map into small places and helps you find what you are looking for. |
Scale | This allows maps to show distances. Ex. 1 inch= 1mile |
Longitude lines | This circles the globe from the North pole to the South pole. The prime meridian is 0º longitude. It divides the Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres. |
Key or legend | This explains the symbols on a map. |
Latitude lines | This circles the globe from side to side. The equator is 0º latitude. It divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. |
