reference map | a map that emphasizes the geographic location of features |
thematic map | a type of map especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area |
GPS | Global Positioning System |
GIS | Geographical Information System, is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data |
distance scale | a ratio which compares a measurement on a map to the actual distance between locations identified on the map |
directional indicator | A compass (or compass rose) that shows, north, south, east, west, and all in between, |
inset map | a small graphic representation (as a map or picture) set within a larger one |
legend | the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used. |
latitude (parallels) | the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes |
longitude (meridians) | the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes |
Equator | an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0° |
Prime Meridian | a planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude. |
northern hemisphere | The northern half of the Earth's surface |
southern hemisphere | The southern half of the Earth's surface |
eastern hemisphere | The half of the Earth that includes Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, as divided roughly by the 0° and 180° meridians |
western hemisphere | the western part of the terrestrial globe, including North and South America, their islands, and the surrounding waters |
continents | any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America) |
map grid | lines on maps define the coordinate system, and are numbered to provide a unique reference to features |
