Term | Definition |
Physical Change | Any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but doesn't change it into another substance. |
Chemical Change | A change in matter that produces one or more new substances. |
Reactants | Substances that undergo chemical changes. |
Products | New substance or substances that are formed. |
Precipitate | A solid that forms forms liquids during a chemical reaction. |
Exothermic Reaction | The energy released as the product form is greater than the energy required to break bonds of the reactants.( usually heat) |
Endothermic Reaction | More energy is required to break bonds of the reactants than is released by the formation of the products. |
Chemical Equation | A way to show a chemical reaction, by using symbols instead of words. |
Law of Conservation Of Mass | During a Chemical Reaction, matter is not created or destroyed. |
Open System | Matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings. |
Closed System | Matter doesn't leave or enter. |
Coefficient | A number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation. |
Synthesis | When two or more elements or compounds combine to make a more complex substance. |
Decoposition | Reacts when compounds break down into simpler products. |
Replacement | If two elements in different compounds trade places. |
Activation Energy | The minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction. |
Concentration | The amount of a substance in a given volume. |
Catalyst | Increases the rate by lowering the activation energy needed. |
Enzymes | The cells in your body that contain thousands of biological catalysts. |
Inhibitor | A material that us used to decrease the rate of chemical reactions. |
